Staff Spotlight: Ciara

Welcome new Fitness Specialist Ciara Van Ness!

Please join us in welcoming Ciara Van Ness to our fitness team! Ciara is originally from New Jersey, but she has lived in Colorado for over 10 years and completed her bachelor’s degree in integrative psychology at CU Boulder. Prior to working at the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center, Ciara was a trainer at various gyms and fitness studios in the Boulder area, teaching both individuals and groups. She has a wide variety of interests, from hiking and rock climbing to yoga, meditation and photography. One of her favorite places is Red Rocks, as it combines two of her favorite things: music and fitness. Ciara is also a practitioner of jiu jitsu and credits it with improving her confidence and teaching her valuable life skills. Read on to learn more about Ciara in her own words:

Why did you become a trainer?
From an early age, I learned that I could use exercise to help manage my own stress, depression and anxiety. Training allowed me to discover my own strength and push beyond what I thought was possible. Also, I have always loved helping others. Training is one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve ever had because you have the ability to completely change someone’s life through education, accountability and lifestyle changes.

What can clients expect when training with you?
My training sessions are based on a science-backed results approach. Clients can expect to be pushed physically and mentally, but most importantly, will enjoy working out in the process. It is my goal to do everything possible to ensure that my clients are successful in reaching their own goals and deliver results. Also, my background in martial arts has resulted in quite a few injuries for me personally, so I’ve learned to how blend rehabilitation, strength and mobility into each session.

What’s unique about your training style?
I like to implement different exercise formats (AMRAP, EMOM, Chipper, etc.) as well as mix up equipment to keep things interesting. Depending on the client’s goals, I also like to alternate days that are more conditioning focused. Additionally, there will always be plenty of challenging core work to help build up those baby abs of steel.

What is your key to staying motivated?
Personally, I don’t believe much in motivation. Motivation is fleeting and is often affected by our emotions. I believe in discipline and doing the work even on days when you don’t want to show up.  Those always end up been some of the best training sessions, but it is equally important to understand when your body needs to rest.

What is your favorite part of working at the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center?
My favorite part about working at the center is hands down the amazing university community. I feel so lucky to be able to help the doctors, nurses, employees and students that play such a critical role in our healthcare system. The reputation of the CU Anschutz Medical Campus pushes me to be my best self by staying up to date with the current research and always learning new things.
