Devra Keyes is one of the many Group Exercise Instructors we have at the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center. Learn more about her passion for the importance of understanding the how and why behind a healthy fitness lifestyle.
What classes do you teach at the AHWC?
“Currently, at AHWC, I’m on the schedule to teach BodyPump and RPM. I cover other classes when there is a need for a sub and am certified to teach BodyCombat, CXworx, PopPilates, BodyFlow, cycle, and BodyStep.”
What made you choose to teach that style/type of class?
“Since I teach a variety of different styles, I can’t say I have one particular “type”. I enjoy high-intensity training, endurance training, and mind/body work. I teach a lot of the Les Mills formats because I appreciate that all of their workouts are supported by good science and are challenging and inspiring as well.”
What is unique about your teaching style?
“I really enjoy teaching at AHWC because so many of the participants are from the AMC where I happen to work my “day” job. I love how this center supports a population of extremely intelligent and motivated members. It’s important in my own training that I understand not only the “how” (proper technique) but also the “why” (the science behind the exercise). I try to make my classes informative so that participants leave with a better understanding of what they are experiencing.”
What’s the one thing you HAVE to have in order to work out?
“You must have a body. That’s it. It doesn’t matter what type, what limitations you have or what your goals are. You simply need to have a body and there will be some form of exercise you can do.”
What motivates you?
“I tell my classes that the reason we work out is so that we can go to the bathroom by ourselves when we are 90. My mother-in-law is 86 and she stills hits the gym on a weekly basis. She is able to easily get up and down from the floor to play with her animals. I have had some serious injuries and surgeries in the past and I am so grateful to simply be able to move even if there are some limitations. I recently finished an advanced certification in weight management and it has reinforced my beliefs that health and fitness is such a personal journey and comes in so many different variations. Group Exercise classes can be intimidating, and I am always motivated by people who come in with their own set of challenges and face their fears in a group setting. It’s never going to be about perfection for me, only progress.”
Name some of your hobbies.
“We live in Colorado, so being outdoors is such an amazing experience. I have two cats and a dog and adore all three and I am pretty sure everyone knows it! I spent 15 years as an Equity actor and did a lot of regional theater and Broadway tours, and even though I no longer make my living as an actor, I still get bitten by the bug occasionally.”
