Healthy Recipe: Sweet Potato and Cumin Seed Soup

Culinary Comforts Sweet Potato and Cumin Soup


¼ cup canola oil
2 t cumin seeds
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp ground coriander
1 onion, chopped
1-inch piece of ginger, peeled and chopped
3 cloves garlic, crushed
1 small red chili, seeded and chopped
2.2 lb. sweet potato, peeled and chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 tomatoes, chopped
Pinch of salt and pepper
1-quart vegetable broth
1 cup plain yogurt


Heat a saucepan over medium heat, add the oil and swirl around until heated. Add the cumin seeds, turmeric, and coriander. Stir for 1 minute then add onion, garlic, ginger and chili and cook until aromatic. Add sweet potato, celery, tomato, and salt and pepper. Stir to coat the vegetables with spices. Reduce heat, and cook stirring every couple of minutes for 10 minutes. Add the broth and cook for another 10 minutes or until the sweet potato is soft. Puree in a food processor or blender until smooth, adding extra broth if needed. Top with a generous spoonful of yogurt.
