Recapping Week 1 of Kathie J. and Larry’s weight loss journey
With Holly Wyatt, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center
Denver radio personalities Kathie J. and Larry from Jammin’ 101.5 have just started the State of Slim, a transformational weight loss program, and they’re documenting their journey through videos and online. Under my guidance, they will spend 16 weeks changing the way they eat, move and think. If you’ve been contemplating a weight loss program, following their journey will be a great way to find out if this is the right fit for you.
Simultaneously, I’m going to explain the science behind the weight loss through my own set of videos. Here on this page, find recaps of my videos and takeaways you can apply to your own life.
Starting State of Slim
Week 1 of State of Slim is all about taking the first big steps to make a commitment to weight loss. Here are the three essentials to getting off to a successful start:
1. Start with nutrition
In Week 1, it’s all about firing up those fat burners, and we do that through the nutrition. Restricting what we’re eating helps kick your metabolism into gear. Adherence to strict diets fades over time, so we have to make the most of your motivation now, when you have the most willpower to follow a stricter diet. (Next week, we’ll talk more specifically about the food we’re eating, called the Colorado Diet.)
2. Know where you want to go
If you want to stop the yo-yo (that never-ending cycle of losing weight, gaining weight, losing weight, gaining weight), you’ve got to think about where you want to be at the end of all this. We’ll work on this every week, getting into some deeper reasons for why you’re losing weight. For now, start visualizing what your life will look like at the end of the weight loss journey. What will your daily routines look like? What kind of person will you be that you are not today? That will give you motivation to keep going on those tough days, and it will also be the key to maintenance.
3. Get comfortable being uncomfortable
State of Slim is a transformational program and it’s a lot bigger than losing weight; we don’t just work on the body, we work on the mind. We do that through experience-based learning that gets us out of our comfort bubble. We don’t like to be uncomfortable — no one likes that feeling. But guess what? If you really want to change, you have to get outside your bubble because your bubble is responsible for the weight you are today.
Your Takeaway: When you catch yourself feeling uncomfortable, when you catch yourself saying, “I don’t want to do this,” do it anyway, and I guarantee it will shift your mindset. And that is the feeling of true change.
